The commander of Iraq’s air drive says Iraqi and coalition planes have stepped up airstrikes on Islamic State targets within the city of Tal Afar, forward of a deliberate offensive there.
Lt. Gen. Anwar Hama says the planes attacked the IS group headquarters, tunnels and weapons’ shops on Tuesday.
This comes as Iraqi forces are build up across the IS-held city west of Mosul, one of many final pockets of militant-held territory in Iraq after victory was declared towards the militants in Mosul in July.
The United Nations says some forty nine,000 individuals have fled the Tal Afar district since April.
In response to the U.N., over the course of the 9-month operation to retake Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest metropolis, almost one million individuals have been displaced from in and across the metropolis.
