Seattle bars landlords from checking on criminal history

The Seattle Metropolis Council has handed new laws that some say is probably the most progressive tenant protections within the nation.

KCPQ-TV reviews (http://bit.ly/2vW0vDg ) that the principles handed on Monday say that landlords can not examine an individual’s felony historical past.

Proponents of the brand new guidelines say it is a second probability for individuals who have paid their debt to society. Landlords worry it ties their arms and creates security considerations for his or her residents.

This is not the primary time Seattle lawmakers have tried to make renting simpler for individuals. The town already requires landlords to simply accept new tenants on a primary-come, first-serve foundation.

Landlords are suing the town over that regulation, claiming it’s unconstitutional.

Throughout Monday’s council assembly, the viewers roared when the brand new laws was authorised unanimously.
