The Venice Movie Pageant is kicking off the autumn cinema season with searing drama, critical glamour and a crop of latest films vying for consideration, awards and acclaim.
The world’s oldest cinema pageant is a key showcase for movies hoping to dominate Hollywood’s awards season. In recent times, Venice has been a launch-pad for Oscar winners together with “Birdman,” ”Highlight” and “La La Land.”
This yr’s version opens with Alexander Payne’s “Downsizing,” a science fiction-tinged drama starring Matt Damon as a person who hopes to attenuate his issues by shrinking himself.
Different movies competing for the pageant’s Golden Lion prize embrace George Clooney-directed heist film “Suburbicon”; Guillermo del Toro’s fantastical “The Form of Water” and Darren Aronofsky’s secrecy-shrouded thriller “Mom!”
The 74th Venice Movie Pageant runs Wednesday to Sept. 9.
