View from the street: Police stood by as adversaries fought

It did not take lengthy for a weekend gathering of white nationalists in Charlottesville to erupt into chaos.

As attendees and counterprotesters converged close to the downtown park and the gang grew, so did the hostility. Individuals fought brazenly within the streets, punching and beating each other and unleashing chemical sprays.

An Related Press reporter and photographer witnessed the violence unfold. Neither noticed a regulation enforcement officer step in to intervene within the brawls, although state police say they made three arrests.

Now, individuals on each side and a few former regulation enforcement officers are questioning why police did not do extra.

Officers together with the governor have defended the response, saying officers needed to present restraint as a result of the gang was so extremely armed.
